Despite the naturalness of breastfeeding, many women experience sore, cracked and damaged nipples, especially in the early stages.

WHAT CAN BE DONE ABOUT SORE NIPPLES & DAMAGED NIPPLES?
Marcalan is a naturally derived, soothing, hypo-allergenic, highly purified blend of lanolins for the effective relief of sore nipples. Its unique formulation is designed to provide maximum moisturisation between feeds and therefore to speed the healing process. Other lanolins can take longer to be fully absorbed.

Marcalan can be used before the birth, and continued after the birth as a natural assistant to help mothers especially in the establishing stages of breastfeeding.

Preventing Nipple Damage – To prevent nipple damage, here are a few tips you can try:

• Use Marcalan once or twice daily in the third trimester to improve the smoothness, elasticity & moisture balance of the nipple making it better able to cope with the demands of breastfeeding.
• Ensure baby is positioned correctly and attached well.
• Change breast pads frequently.
• Avoid the use of products which may dry the skin (eg. soaps)
• Avoid rapid air drying which may cause irregular shrinkage, leading to cracking.

Managing Nipple Damage – Many mothers are advised to treat damaged nipples with exposure to the air. Aside from the impracticality of this advice for many busy mums, it is also contrary to modern principles of healing which stipulate establishing a moist wound healing environment. Research has revealed wounds can heal 50% faster and without scabbing or crusting using moist wound healing techniques.

When baby breastfeeds, the nipple is in a wet environment and the tissue absorbs moisture and swells. Rapid air drying causes irregular shrinkage and the resulting tension on the skin causes cracking. Marcalan provides a semi-occlusive barrier to slow evaporation of moisture already present in the skin, thereby eliminating further drying and cracking. It is absorbed into the nipple, so tissue is re-hydrated from within, and exposed nerve endings (which are a source of pain) are returned to a more normal moist state.

HOW SHOULD I USE MARCALAN?

During the third trimester, Marcalan used once or twice daily will help condition the skin, making the nipple more elastic and supple. With clean hands soften a small amount between fingertips and apply to the entire nipple area.

Post-natally, Marcalan should be applied to the entire nipple area before and after breastfeeding or as required, to provide soothing relief, and to protect and moisturise.

Pregnancy and breastfeeding place rigorous demands on nipple tissue. During pregnancy nipple size may double. Nipple tissue can increase to twice this size again in baby’s mouth during feeding. Marcalan improves smoothness, elasticity and moisture balance of the nipple making it better able to cope with the demands of breastfeeding.

OTHER USES OF MARCALAN
The use of Marcalan hypo-allergenic lanolin is not limited only to nipples. It is also an excellent intensive moisturising treatment for the whole family. Marcalan can assist in healing chapped lips, cracked heels, and dry hands (so common to mothers of young children).
